Birds and the Bees - Mommies and Daddies Tell All

Birds and the Bees - Mommies and Daddies Tell All

BIRDS AND THE BEES Mommies and Daddies Tell All is an anthology compiled with stories from parents who have chosen to share their experiences with you. Strangely, many adults were never told by their parents what to expect as their bodies changed or what happened between grown-ups in the wonderful world of procreation, hence forming misconceptions regarding the ‘Birds and the Bees’. Many individuals in their late teens and the early college years confess that they learned about intimacy from their peers, and found out the hard way that standing on their head after intimacy does not stop a baby from coming.

It is for this reason that schools, television ads, after school programs and other community service related organizations have taken on the task of helping parents get the conversation started. Many parents are unprepared, un-nerved, ill-equipped and uncertain as to when should be the ‘right time’, to have that “talk”. Not because they don’t know how or don’t want to, but instead, because they have no frame of reference on how to go about it. Of course we want our children to stay as children for as long as possible, unfortunately, in this world of television and uncensored radio commercials about more “width and girth” and the lasting effects of the “little blue pill”, they are thrust upon the journey of self discovery much earlier than we would like. If we don’t tell them, someone will, in which case it might be an ill-advised classmate who has become an unwilling victim to a very visual and explicit world, and that could happen as early as second grade.

It is with this in mind that the contributors have taken the time to share their personal stories regarding how they discovered the truth about intimacy and how they themselves have broken the news to their little ones in BIRDS AND THE BEES Mommies and Daddies Tell All.

Some stories may make us laugh, blush, feel sad or reflective, but they all leave us with one thing, an idea of how another mom and dad did. Some stories may give ideas of what NOT to do and others, successful narratives of how the situation went over well. You and you alone are your child’s first teacher, and you must decide if you want to share these stories with them as a way to break the ice, read it together as a conversation opener or read it alone to prepare. Whatever your choice, you are now armed with this diverse and colorful arsenal of stories. Like Mommies and Daddies before you, there will be mistakes, mishaps and miscommunication, but you will not have missed the opportunity to guide your child in the right direction or help them to understand the importance of knowing when, where, why and how to help them transition from children into healthy well informed adults.
